Stiff battle for attraction of both landing and taking off passengers is on between the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport (SMICA), Owerri, Imo State, and Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA) in Rivers State.
This stemmed from the ongoing repairs at the Akanu Ibiam Airport, Enugu which has already been closed down.
Recall that part of the resolutions by South-east governors included the diversion of air traffic to Owerri to ease the difficulties of air travel into the region while the Enugu airport closure lasted. Already, several domestic airlines have made plans to double their carrier’s frequency into Owerri, to accommodate Enugu-bound traffic from Lagos and Abuja.
