Air Namibia unveils Windhoek-Lagos-Accra flight to tap from Ghana regional hub
No doubt, several African airlines have started linking up to the risen aviation hub status of Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana.
Recent occurrences’ have shown that the international status of Kotoka Airport has surpassed those of Abuja, Lagos, Dakar and others in West Africa as several international carriers now prefer to land in Ghana before their passengers are distributed within the region by waiting local and other registered carriers.
Air Namibia has decided to tap from the development driven by serious investment by the current Ghanaian government at Kotoka International Airport and therefore announced plans to commence flight operations into Lagos, Nigeria via Accra, Ghana from its base in Windhoek, Namibia.
With this development, Air Namibia will begin to serve as passenger-offtakers from the Kotoka hub and also suppliers of passenger traffic to same airport.
A statement by the airline said the new route will provide a direct and convenient service connecting Namibia to the two West African countries.
“The four times weekly operation (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Windhoek) will provide smooth and convenient connections inbound and outbound to the airline’s regional flights, connecting West Africa via Windhoek to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Luanda, Harare, Lusaka, Vic Falls, Gaborone Walvis Bay and Durban,” the statement said.
Already, the airline has entered into an agreement with APG Network as its General Sales & Service Agent (GSSA) in Nigeria and Ghana to facilitate operations.
In accordance with the GSSA agreement entered into, APG Network will provide full sales and marketing services, as well as call center and customer care services on behalf of Air Namibia in the two countries.
Nigeria is yet to have a national carrier either for air or shipping even as analysts recall that setting up of a national fleet for both models of transportation was one of the promises of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi in September, 2015 when the present cabinet of the federal government was inaugurated.
