MAN discussing with FG on taking power directly from Gencos— Ajayi-Kadiri

A new power distribution template that will bypass Distribution Companies (Discos) and link electricity directly from generation Companies (Gencos) to members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) is being presently worked out.

In an interview, the Director General of MAN, Segun Ajayi-Kadiri, revealed that having discovered that Discos to a larger extent, lack the capacity to distribute generated powers effectively and effiecently.

This understanding by MAN, according to Ajayi-Kadiri made the group to begin talks with the minister to see how we can take power directly without going through the Discos.

“That is what we are working on presently. We are taking advantage of the enabling environment the minister is creating. Probably what he was saying was how the manufacturers can take the electricity, which we welcome with both hands and we are sensitizing our members and gearing up so that it will be helpful and boost our production.

However, contacted officials of one of the leading Discos who pleaded anonymity said “That plan may not work because it negates the statutory provisions of the laws backing up the privatization of the sector”.

“We were checked before being given Disco licences and as such the same government that gave us substantive licence to distribute generated power cannot come from back to give such powers to companies that are not registered as power distribution companies.

“If we observe that such a plot is likely going to work, which translates to removing us from business, Discos know what to do and at the right time.
