Leading building solutions provider, Lafarge Africa Plc has explained why it partnered the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) in the research and development of Nigeria’s first concrete mix design manual.

Recall that the group was the country’s first commercial concrete manufacturer that contributed to the development of the manual which was launched in Abuja recently.

Other partners included the Nigeria Road and Building Research Institute (NI&BRI), Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and the University of Uyo.

Giving an insight to the decision of the company to spearhead the innovative scheme in Nigeria, the Director of Marketing, Lafarge Africa Plc, Mr. Vipul Agrawal, said the manual would help in building durable structures.

According to him, “We commend COREN for ensuring that Nigeria now has a credible well researched concrete mix design manual to be used for concrete work in buildings and infrastructure projects in the country”.

“We call on all those involved in the manufacturing and use concrete for infrastructure development in Nigeria to use the manual to make quality concrete in building durable structures.”

Earlier during the presentation, COREN President, Mr. Kashim Ali, said the concrete manual was based on local environmental conditions and raw materials and did not have to depend on reference manuals of other countries.

He noted that “It will be constantly upgraded in line with improvements in building technology,” stressing that the manual provides step by step guidelines on the selection and proportioning of concrete ingredients such as cement, sand and aggregates, and the mixing and placing of concrete.
