Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) recently received a team from Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), distributors of Coca Cola products in Nigeria, who paid a courtesy visit to the Authority to get acquainted with present waste management practices spearheaded by LAWMA in the state, especially as it concerns PET bottles recycling.

In her welcome address, the Assistant General Manager, Administration and Human Resources, Mrs. Adenike Sobowale, who represented the General Manager, Mr. Segun Adeniji, stated what the Authority has been doing to ensure a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

Mrs. Sobowale mentioned the various arms of the Authority that work relentlessly towards implementing a holistic approach to waste management in the state and other places like Liberia and Sierra Leone, where the Authority had been called upon to intervene.

She further informed that from September 1, 2017, LAWMA will become a full regulatory body, with the responsibility to ensure that waste managers in the state perform their duties effectively.

Mr. Jide Onayiga, LAWMA’s Assistant General Manager, Special Duties, made a short presentation detailing the process of waste recycling, particularly PET bottles, which have in recent times posed a challenge to the environment, considering the issue of flooding and blockage of drains in the state.

Speaking during the visit, Ms. Ifeoma Okoye, Region Public Affairs Manager (Lagos & West) at Coca-Cola HBC, said the visit by the team was to have a firsthand experience of what LAWMA is currently doing in the waste management sector of the State. She pointed out that LAWMA and Coca Cola have had a productive partnership for some years now.

In her response, Klaske de Jonge, Public Affairs and Communications, Coca-Cola, Switzerland, acknowledged the enormous work LAWMA had to do ensure that every nook and cranny of the metropolis was kept clean, and wished the Authority well in all of its endeavours.
