An irreconcilable scenario seems to be playing out on the best option for the revival of all the ailing nation’s four refineries.
Whereas the Major Oil Marketers’ Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) is of the view that no amount of fund sunk into the turnaround maintenance (TAM) of the refineries can make the facilities come back to life due to institutional corruption in running Nigeria’s refineries over the years, oil workers under the aegis of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), on Wednesday sought the Federal Government’s commitment to their repairs.
Currently, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is in a fix on how it will defend before the national assembly its fresh bill of $1.8bn needed to repair the facilities having sunk well over $2bn in the last few years without any meaningful result.
Anger of the federal lawmakers rose when it discovered that all the approvals they had given in the recent past for the repairs could not produce a good result hence they have directed NNPC to come forward with facts and figures showing that the refineries will work at maximum capacity this time.
The President of PENGASSAN, Mr. Francis Johnson, during a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, said, “Our association seeks strong commitment from the government to carry out a comprehensive rehabilitation of the three refineries with timelines and effect strategies of adequate and sustainable crude supply to the refineries.”
