Whereas the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the lead telecoms regulator has announced the restoration of cut subsea cables and allied services up to 90 percent across the federation, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has claimed that it kept silent on the cable crisis because the cut happened far away from the territorial waters of West Africa, Gulf of Guinea and Nigeria in particular.
In an interview, the Assistant Director, Public Relations and Press, Mr. Eric Osagie told Business Hilights that event though NIMASA was aware of the cable cuts, there is nothing we can do because the accident did not happen within our areas of jurisdiction and control like the Gulf of Guinea, West Coast and Nigeria.
He said even though the impacts were most felt within the area, NIMASA is always concerned with happenstances within its areas of jurisdiction at all times.
Recall that cuts in subsea cables had been reported in the last few days which have paralysed telecoms and internet services.
However, latest report shows that repairs and service restoration has reached over 90 percent for services in Nigeria and beyond.
