Global internet rating agency, Surshark.com has released its 2023 Digital Quality of Life (DQL) Index which ranked Nigeria 7th in Africa and 88th in the world this year: https://surfshark.com/dql2023.
The indication of the 2023 rating according to experts amongst others, is that contrary to claims by the Federal Government that broadband penetration is superb, it was just crawling after all.
The DQL Index is an annual study that ranks 121 countries by their digital wellbeing based on 5 core pillars: internet quality, internet affordability, e-security, e-infrastructure, and e-government.
Key insights:
Nigeria lags behind South Africa (72nd) and Kenya (76th) in digital quality of life.
Nigeria’s internet quality is just around the global average and ranks 62nd in the world.
Nigeria’s fixed internet speed (25 Mbps) has improved by 33% since last year, while mobile speed (47 Mbps) has improved by 87%.
The internet is highly unaffordable in Nigeria compared to other countries. Nigerians have to work 35 hours 25 minutes a month to afford fixed broadband internet — 119 times more than in Romania, which has the world’s most affordable fixed internet.
Nigeria performed worst in the internet affordability pillar (108th), which would need to improve by 92% to match the best-ranking country (France).
