According to the law, the only three instances that see the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to leave office are death, resignation or completion of tenure.
In the case of Godwin Emefiele; first, he created his travails by veering into the murky waters of Nigerian politics by surreptitiously contesting for 2023 presidency which eventually enmeshed him in removal controversy which started with his arrest by the DSS.
Whereas there are news from Reuters that Emefiele reportedly resigned as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in August having been suspended in June, tendered his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu.
Though there had been no clear indication that the resignation was part of plea bargain, TheCable revealed he had initially submitted the letter to the Department of State Services (DSS) — but it was rejected as the law only allows him to submit it to the president.
With Emefiele’s resignation, legal concerns regarding the nomination of Dr. Yemi Mike Cardoso as the new governor of CBN have been laid to rest.
In a statement on Friday, Ajuri Ngelale, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, announced Cardoso’s nomination.
Already, as the coast is now clear following his resignation, many activists are asking for his full trial in a competent court of jurisdiction.
