The largest power generating station in Nigeria, Egbin Power Plc, recorded a record-breaking 1000MW power generation peak on Sunday, June 25, 2023, and also generated nearly one-third of Nigeria’s total power load on yesterday.

This figure was based on data obtained from the Nigerian Electricity System Operator (NESO) as of 9 a.m on Monday, June 26, 2023.
The development was confirmed by Head of Corporate Communications and Branding, Egbin Power, Felix Ofolue .
He added that the peak generation was achieved despite the prevailing challenges confronting the Nigerian power sector.
He also credited the feat to the expertise and dedication of the company’s employees and the support of the management and other stakeholders.
Ofolue further noted that the company is committed to sustaining the milestone.
He said, “Sustenance of the milestone is naturally tied to monitoring of operation and ensuring that everything is in order.”
Ofolue therefore stated that Egbin Power will continue to do everything within its scope of capacity to improve its supply to the national grid.
He said, “The management is delighted at the tireless commitment of our employees to our vision of bringing energy to life responsibly.”
The first phase of its expansion project was in 2023, with the construction of open-cycle turbines.
However, the power station expansion project was a 1,900MW gas-fired power project that is expected to be developed in a single phase.
The project is currently at the permitting stage and is expected to commence construction in 2024, with commercial operation beginning in 2025.
The project is being developed by Egbin Power and Marubeni, and is currently owned by Egbin Power with a stake of 100 per cent.
Based on the agreement, the fuel for the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant will be procured from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, and the project cost is expected to be around $1,200million.
Egbin Power Plc, last year, announced a robust strategy for its Phase Two investment expansion plan that is projected to add up to 1,750 megawatts (MW) into the national grid.
The company plans to increase its generation capacity to 2,640 MW over three to four years at a cost of $1.8 billion.
