More than one month after a combined team of Police and Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) swooped on a residential compound allegedly used two Chinese nationals to sort and package scavenged electronic wastes for export to China, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) both Lagos State division and headquarters in Abuja are yet to react to the incident.

However, earlier in the week and Tuesday in particular, the Federal agency warned that it is ready to ease out incompetent environmental consultants who degrade the country’s environmental laws.

Speaking in Abuja at the 4th induction course for 2019 accredited environmental consultants organised by the agency, the Director General, Prof. Aliyu Jauro, said the the consultants being inducted were responsible for carrying out environmental auditing on behalf of their clients while NESREA’s role would be to review their work and issue certificates accordingly.

According to him, NESREA is not happy observing that some consultants already accredited are enmeshed in professional misconduct, recalling that NESREA had 33 environmental regulations that dealt with waste management.

“We have different types of waste such as e-waste, medical waste, solid and liquid waste but our regulations in the area of medical waste will soon be ready.”

Jauro noted that the Federal agency is partnering with similar federal and states’ agencies on sound environmental management since its regulation covered issues on desertification and flooding.
