Midway into day one of the nationwide strike embarked upon by Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Wednesday, the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), has given an indication that the erring International Oil Companies (IOCs) who had hitherto maintained no payment for stevedoring contractors, have given in.
Besides, another angle for the strike according to the workers include the poor administration of cabotage regime at the ports to the apparent advantages of both foreign vessels and IOCs.
Checks at the Apapa Ports Complex, Tin Can Island Ports, and other four ports in the Eastern region were paralyzed even as demurrages on cargoes build up.
Recall that the President General of MWUN, Comrade Abdul-Waheed Adeyanju had assured that the ports would be shutdown effective Wednesday for the resumption of strike action against the anti-labour law treatment of workers.
However, the Managing Director of NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman on Wednesday told journalists that “We are talking. And we are hoping that something very concrete would be arrived at, before the close of today.”
