Fresh facts have been made public on why Nigeria’s unemployment statistics have remained on the rising stretch.
Explaining the matter in an interview, Prof Augustine Ikelegbe of the Institute for Security Studies, Lower Usman Dam, Abuja, said “the inability of the crafters of Nigerian University education curricula to timely reform the course outlines and even nomenclatures of existing fields of studies and the creation of new fields that are salutary to modern digital realities, is the key challenge causing jumping unemployment crisis in Nigeria.”
He said unless the Federal Government pays serious attention to his observations, the ugly and embarrassing unemployment statistics facing the country will not end sooner.
Ikelegbe, who spoke on the theme: ‘University Education and the Contemporary Labour Market in Nigeria,’ at the 12th matriculation ceremony of the Western Delta University, Oghara, Delta State argued that if these reforms are further delayed, Nigeria may lose out in the jumping scientifically and technologically progressive world.
