In a terse notice sent to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Monday, Zenith Bank Plc has appointed Mr Ebenezer Onyeagwu as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer to replace retiring Peter Amanbgo effective June 1.
While noting that the appointment remains subject to the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the bank averred that Amangbo’s tenure will expire on May 31, 2019.
Business Hilights recalls that Onyeagwu has been Zenith Bank’s Deputy Managing Director since October 2016 and has spent 17 years working with the bank.
In a brief detail, Zenith Bank revealed that the appointment was consistent with its tradition and succession strategy of grooming leaders from within.
Coming from accounting background from Auchi Polytechnic, Onyeagwu began his career at the defunct Financial Merchant Bank in 1991 and later held several management positions in the erstwhile Citizens International Bank Limited until 2002 when he joined Zenith Bank.
Before now, he has bagged postgraduate diploma in Financial Strategy and a certificate in Macroeconomics from the University of Oxford. Onyeagwu is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
Analysts who spoke to our correspondent on the new development welcomed the announcement saying the traditional operating standards of the bank will remain intact as the incoming CEO grew within.
