Key amongst the high points from a two-day workshop on political broadcast put together by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Lagos is the call on the industry regulator to engage station owners to allow broadcasters carry out their roles professionally.
Theme of the workshop; ‘The media coverage of 2015 elections, challenges, regulatory framework and the way forward for a credible 2019 elections,’ was chosen in view of the fast approaching general elections to avoid abusive broadcast.
In a communiqué issued, the Director General of NBC, Is’haq Modibo Kawu, advised broadcast outfits to refrain from broadcasting hate speeches and inciting comments, saying “Being professionals would ensure the consolidation of democracy as the role of the media is central to the success of democracy”.
The Communiqué also averred that all stories must be double facts-checked before going to press and that advertising Standards Panel must vet every political adverts before being carried or aired.
