The Head of Netherlands representation in Lagos, Michel Deelen has advised the Lagos State Government to up investment in infrastructure on its waterway transportation so as to unlock the potentials in the sub-sector.

Speaking on water transportation during a scheduled visit to the State Commissioner of Transportation, Ladi Lawanson, he said his country would be willing to partner the Lagos State government in improving the state transportation system as well as manage the traffic challenges.

Deelen revealed that Lagos and the Netherlands share a lot of similarities in terms of population, size and closeness to the coast.

According to him, “Lagos State must understand that a lot of infrastructure is needed to service water transport system to make it functional,” stressing that “the waterways in his country are dredged yearly to ensure smooth movement on water”.

Though the host Commissioner, Lawanson was mute on the number times Lagos navigable inland waters had been dredged in the last 10 years, he noted that Deelen visit was to avail him first hand information on what the state is doing so as to give technical advice on how the state will move forward in the sub-sector in partnership.
