Consultant to one of the leading operators of technology hub in Lagos, Mr. Seun Adekanola has cautioned the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) to be mindful of the current high cost of data in Nigeria when compared to neighbouring countries and Ghana in particular.

In an interview on the notice given by the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta during his induction as a Fellow of the Nigeria Academy of Engineering (NAE), Adekanola argued that “Any plan to hike the data price in Nigeria will apart from frustrating financial inclusion, hobble the performance and growth of technology hubs springing up in parts of the country.

“Again, any hike in price of data in Nigeria this time, will upturn gains so far made knowledge economy drive of the country.

Business Hilights recalls that Danbatta, who was inducted along with 11 others at the investiture of Prof. Fola Lasisi as the 10th President of the academy, in his acceptance speech, averred that “The commission had completed a new framework that would give telecommunication companies the opportunity to participate in spectrum sharing.

It would recalled that NCC’s move last year to review the data price floor was met with stiff opposition even from the National Assembly and it was not yet clear if the Commission has gotten clearance from the federal lawmakers ahead of the expected review.

“With the new framework, you can transfer, lease and share your spectrum.

“These recent achievements of the commission will ensure optimum utilisation of spectrum,” Danbatta said.

NAE was incorporated as a private company limited by guarantee in September 1997, for the purpose of promoting excellence in technological and engineering training and practice to ensure technological growth and economic development of Nigeria.
