Acting on a tip off, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command said it had seized 20 Toyota Hilux vehicles in Kano with a total duty paid value of N100m.
The Area Comptroller, Mr. Yusuf Abba-Kasim, said this at a news conference in Kano State, revealing that “The vehicles were seized by officers of the command. We received intelligence information that some people had smuggled vehicles into Kano from neighbouring country without payment of duty”.
“The vehicles were hidden somewhere in Kano metropolis and we quickly mobilised officers to the place and seized the vehicles.”
He explained that the seized Toyota Hilux vehicles, with N5m custom duty each, cost N15m each and they may be released only when a credible duty payment documents are sighted or they remain permanently forfeited to the federal government in line with CMA Act as amended.
Continuing, he noted that one suspect had been arrested, while others involved in the crime would soon be brought to book.
Abba-Kasim also noted that the Kano/Jigawa Customs Command generated over N600m revenue in the first quarter of 2018.
While appealing to importers to always pay their customs duties and declare the exact content of goods being imported, the comptroller added that “The money will be used to improve the lives of citizens”.
