Like Nigeria, Ghana government mulls cattle ranches to end farmers/herdsmen crisis
Barely three weeks after warning that Ghana will not tolerate the incessant farmers/Fulani herdsmen bloody clashes in Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu, has given indication of government’s readiness to create ranches in the country for cattle grazing.
This is coming at a time the Benue State government has reported another attack that claimed about 60 lives with the influx of another one million cows at a time the State’s Anti-open grazing law is prevailing.
The governor also gave a fresh hit of impending attacks by herdsmen in some Benue communities.
Business Hilights recalls that more than one month of the new Anti-open grazing law, attacks have heightened in the state as herders insist that the law must be rested for their business to continue.
Out of pressure, Taraba State penultimate week rested its Anti-open grazing law, but indications are rife that Benue is not ready to rest the law, but to maintain the law with high sense of intelligence.
According to the Ghanaian IGP, “The Cattle Ranching initiative would enable Fulani herdsmen to allow their cattle to graze without encroaching on people’s farms and end the violence attacks between nomadic herdsmen and local communities.
Asante-Apeatu noted that government had held discussions with key stakeholders to that effect, stressing that the activities of the nomadic Fulani herdsmen remained a key national security challenge which needed to be tackled in more proactive manner.
