Whereas Russia has signed agreements with Nigeria to build and operate a nuclear power plant, security experts are beginning to weigh the security of the zone where it will be located considering the myriads of security challenges domiciled some parts of the country.
Analysts are already expressing fears on why government went ahead to sign the agreement when an area of safe location is yet to identify and confirm. Some observers say there are indications that government may have secretly and unilaterally chosen a place without due diligence and special consideration to security and kept it because it is against the run of events to sign such agreement without a location named in the document.
However, government sources say feasibility studies for the plant and a research center construction will include site screening, capacity, financing, and time frames of the projects, state-owned Russian nuclear company Rosatom said.
Business Hilights gathered that Nigeria in 2015 was in talks with Rosatom to build as many as four nuclear power plants costing about $20 billion, the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) said at the time.
Besides, the Russian firm is seeking to build nuclear power plants in other countries on the continent including South Africa.
