Broadband penetration seems to have weakened in June as latest data on internet users released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed a paltry increase of 33,747, moving from91,565,010 users recorded in May to 91,598,757 in June.
Above all, the report showed that MTN Nigeria has continued to dominate the internet space in Nigeria with marginal trail by Airtel.
Pointer to the outplaying scenario on why MTN is on comfortable lead both on voice and data may not be unconnected to the observations of the Chief Operating Officer, Muhammad Siddiqui, in the first week of June when he said at a special customer engagement forum in Abuja; ‘An Evening to Connect’, that “Beyond our various customer touch points, we cherish moments such as this one when we have one-on-one interactions with our customers. One of the things MTN is doing more this year is listening, celebrating and delighting customers”.
“We take customer feedback very seriously and in fact, we are only happy when our customers are happy. Our customers’ needs are paramount, hence the need to always engage with them.”
Siddiqui described the forum as an opportunity for MTN customers to engage in frank and open discussions with the brand and added that the event would enable the company’s senior management to listen to customers’ complaints and resolve them.
Industry analysts say part of the resolutions gathered from complains resulted in rising dominance of the telecoms both in voice and data spaces.
According to the latest internet users statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for the month of June, the overall internet users increased by 33,747 to 91, 598,757 from 91,565,010 in May, it also indicated that MTN accounted for 284, 629 new users, increasing its subscription to 31,691,070 from 31,406,441 in May to maintain lead.
The network also is seating on a comfortable lead over others on voice subscriber base which it has maintained since coming into the Nigerian market.
Just as Globacom lost 218,482 internet users and had 27,184,002 data subscribers left on its network in June, it means that the second largest network had 27,402,484 internet users in May.
However, Airtel gained additional 261, 428 new internet users by standing on 20,174,089 internet users, as against 19,912,661 in May.
9Mobile may have started feeling the heat of its financial insolvency as it lost 293,828 internet users, depreciating from12,843,424 users it recorded in May to hang at 12,549,596 users in June.
