More facts have emerged showing that the consolidation of the ageless Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has done well and is still on the right track.
This stems from the recent working visit by the management of Kano State’s Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) who were on a 2-day working visit to LAWMA with the aim of having a working knowledge of the outstanding job done by LAWMA in Lagos state.
Speaking during the visit, the Executive Chairman of LAWMA, Mr. Olumuyiwa Adejokun highlighted the importance of effective waste management in a city. Mr. Adejokun briefly talked about the ongoing reform, which would reposition the Authority to perform effectively its duty as a regulator.
The LAWMA chairman noted that the business of waste management is a capital intensive one which made it necessary for government to engage private investors in the business. He berated the culture of indiscriminate dumping of refuse observed among people in the country and called for attitudinal change for a better environment.
Addressing the REMASAM team, the General Manager, LAWMA, Mr. Segun Adeniji gave an overview of the types of wastes generated in Lagos State; this includes domestic and commercial wastes. He said the daily increase in population has a direct effect on the volume of waste generated in the state. He added that the new waste management reform will create a platform for effectual waste management services in the metropolis.
In his speech, the Managing Director, Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), Kano, Engineer Muhammed Adamu, eulogized LAWMA for the various feats it has attained in waste management within the country and beyond. He said their decision to visit the Authority was informed by the success stories it has recorded in the sector. Engr. Adamu said that REMASAB is working towards replicating in Kano some of the systems LAWMA has adopted in Lagos.
Highpoint of the visit was the tour of LAWMA facilities like landfill sites, engineering sections and Transfer Loading Stations by the REMASAB team to get familiar with the operational process of work done by the Authority.
