Leading conglomerate and foremost total beverage alcohol company, Guinness Plc., has made known its readiness to partner with Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in areas of Waste Management so as to ensure a cleaner and safer society.
This was disclosed today by the Global Sustainable Development Director of the company Mr. David Croft during his courtesy visit to the Authority today.
Mr. Croft who was accompanied by some top management staff of the company said his Company’s decision to partner with LAWMA was borne out of the need to give back to the society that has given it so much patronage and also to fulfill its Expanded Producer Responsibility (EPR) programme.
He disclosed that Guinness will partner with Lawma in areas of enlightenment campaign as well as Recycling citing that Nigeria already has a large market for recyclables. He urged young entrepreneurs to take up recycling and pledged his company’s support while calling for a policy on waste sorting from source, this he said, will reduce the amount of waste at the landfill sites.
Responding, Chairman of LAWMA, Mr. Olumuyiwa Adejokun said that over the years, the Authority had given numerous support to recyclers but more needs to be done in the area of strong advocacy to change the attitude and culture of Lagosians towards waste handling.
Lawma boss also cautioned Multinationals and Manufacturers to be careful in managing their waste saying if not properly handled, these waste can become hazardous and harmful within the society, and he urged them to patronize the relevant agencies in disposing expired products.
Earlier in his welcome address, the General Manager (LAWMA), Mr. Olusegun Adeniji reiterated the State Governments interest in recycling, saying that it’s a huge part of the reforms currently being handled.
A statement signed by ’Lanre Bajulaiye, Director, Public Affairs Department, LAWMA,said Adeniji admitted that there is a lot to be made from recycling and urged budding entrepreneurs to take up the challenge and participate in it, assuring them of Government`s support.
