Prepaid meters and readable meters
The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has resolved the puzzle delaying the availability of Pay As you Go digital meters by the electricity Discos in Nigeria.
In a terse analysis of the scenario by the General Secretary, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson in a national television monitored in Lagos, the NLC made it clear that the estimated billing of consumers by electricity distribution companies is a deliberate ploy to exploit the citizens.
He added that it was inconceivable for the electricity firms to bill consumers who travelled and shutdown everything in their homes as if they were around, arguing that time had come for the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to adopt measures in defence of the consumers of electricity being exploited by the Discos.
The NLC scribe anchored his argument on the revelation that over three million households were not metered and were being given estimated bills out of over six million registered electricity users.
According to him, time has come for government to develop a strategy to stop Discos from billing consumers if they failed to provide meters during a specified period after payment for such upon supply of electricity.
In his submission, “only such a measure would compel the companies to stop the habit of fleecing Nigerians and making them to pay for services not rendered”.
