Senate bumps on Customs Zone A-Lagos, seeks account of 3 years revenue, seizures
The Senate Committee on Customs and Excise has demanded a detailed revenue profile made by the Apapa Area command of the Nigeria Customs Service in the last three years.
They also ordered the premier command of customs to ensure that seizures recorded in the last three years were accounted for.
This is as it asked concessionaires to make available copies of their concession agreements to the Assistant Comptroller General of Customs in charge of zone A. This will be followed by the provision of their assessment performance in the documents.
The Committee chairman, and Senator representing Orlu Senatorial Zone of Imo State, Chief Hope Uzodimma said the Committee is in need of the report so as guide it in the ongoing review of related laws and shape up certain issues in the revenue generation of the federal government.
To the concessionaires, the Committee chairman said “In the history of Nigeria, we want to do what is right for once and government is trying to open new frontiers to collect more revenue”
The terminal operators based in Lagos promised to submit the relevant documents to the office of the ACG.
Responding, the Coordinator, Nigeria Customs Service in Charge of Zone A, ACG Charles Edike, said that in spite of the dwindling importation of cargoes, revenue collection of the Apapa command had been quite impressive.
He said his zone has continued to lead in Customs revenue generation and will continue the lead especially now the government is seeking rise in income.
