‘233% rise in pipeline vandalism in January caused disruptions in gas supplies to power plants’
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has given more insights into the reasons behind the dropping supplies of power across the federation.
In a statement, the corporation said the rate of pipeline vandalism in the country increased by 233 per cent in January this year leading to massive disruptions in mainly gas supplies to power plants.
According to the latest financial and operations report for the month of January 2017, NNPC said the vandalism of pipelines in the Niger Delta was perpetuated by militants in the region, and the impacts are still hobbling the economy as it take more time to replace and rebuild oil and gas installations.
The report said “Pipeline sabotage in the country increased from 18 downstream pipeline vandalised points in December 2016 to 60 in January 2017. This represents 233 per cent increase relative to the previous month despite the Federal Government and NNPC’s continuous engagements with the stakeholders.”
