The state Chairman of Kogi State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Onuh Edoka, has sounded a note of warning to the incumbent governor of the state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello that workers who constitute the bulk of voters in the state will not vote in any chronic debtor as governor of the state come November this year.
Recall that Kogi State goes to the polls toward the end of the year to elect a new governor and there are strong indications that Governor Bello may be seeking re-election.
Addressing the workers who converged at the Confluence Stadium on the occasion of the 2019 Workers’ Day celebration yesterday, Edoka averred that “The state workers would decide who becomes the next governor on November 2, 2019”.
“We have said it and we mean it, any government that refuses to pay salaries and entitlements should not expect the workers to support it win re-election.
Findings and comments of several workers in the state revealed that the state government currently owns close to one year salaries and no strong effort is being made to pay arrears as election comes up in barely few months.
However, to buttress their claims of jumping salary arrears, the workers challenged the state’s accountant-general to publish the payments made so far to workers for the public to actually know the exact amount of money government was owing them.
They further warned the government and its agents to stop branding workers agents of opposition to avoid hitting the streets of Lokoja in protest.
