Anger, frustration and deadly plots are brewing in parts of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, home of Chief Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo, over delays in meeting their community support demands by Chevron Nigeria Limited.
In a stern warning to the oil conglomerate and Delta State Government, Gbaramatu Kingdom averred that consequences abound should Chevron Nigeria Limited and the state government take the resolution of the kingdom to remain peaceful on their demands to Chevron for granted going forward.
They argued further that keeping calm over the years stemmed from the directives by the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, HRM Oboro Gbaraun II on the need for them not to destabilise the existing peace in the area.
However, the community vowed to break loose and occupy oil flow stations in their domain until their demands are met.
Making reference on the recent protest by the people of Ugborodo against Chevron and resolutions so far reached in an interview, image-maker of the kingdom, Chief Godspower Gbenakama noted that “If they want to only listen to protest, we would follow suit until they listen to us and this might be inevitable if they do not listen to us.”
While noting that “Ugborodo and Gbaramatu are both in the same terrain and are host to Chevron in Warri South West,” Gbenakama added that “Ugborodo people’s demands are genuine, but government should not wait for the people to occupy flow stations before attending to them.”
However, Business Hilights recalls that had recently issued an official statement reinstating her continued commitment to people and environmental protection and keeping faith with its well respected Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) in dealing with host communities in areas of operations.
