For some time now, cyber criminals and internet fraudsters’ have been advancing in strategies and tactics feeding financial institutions that failed to beef up their servers’ and digital transactions securities.
However, since recently, a bank in Nigeria seems to be at the mercy of these phishing gangsters and that is Diamond Bank.
Whereas experts say the bank may not be involved, others argue that time has come for deployment of cyber security details that can end the embarrassment hence it is now only linked to the bank amongst others in terms of frequency and reach.
In a post on his Facebook page, a veteran Nigerian journalist, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe wrote unedited; “DIAMOND BANK” 419 TEMPLATE.
He raised salient questions including “Why always Diamond Bank? Why do Yahoo Yahoo boys and girls use this template too frequently?
“Can someone in Diamond Bank tell us why?
“I receive these fraud mails almost daily, but I don’t have an account with Diamond Bank.
“Why Diamond Bank all the time?
Random interviews by Business Hilights weekend amongst adults showed that one out of five Nigerians usually gets scam emails that look as if it is coming from Diamond Bank both account holders and none account holders.
One of the respondents who obliged to show and forward the scam mail to our correspondent said he has no account in the bank and the mail has been coming ceaselessly.
The email (screenshot attached) read as follows unedited; “Dear Customer, NGN 23,015,00 is to be debited from your account for failure to update and migrate to our latest products (*710*,etc).
“You have to review your account with us immediately to avoid the debit.
“Follow here to ‘REVIEW YOUR ACCOUNT OR GET DEBITED’.
“To continue the use of Diamond Mobile/internet banking follow the reference: https//mobile.diamondbank.com/home
“Once you validate your details completely your account will return to normalcy
“Thank you for banking with us
“Thank you for choosing Diamond Bank Plc.
Though efforts to reach out to the bank’s customer service failed on Monday, it would be recalled that several financial regulators have been advising banks and other financial institutions to introduce systems and Apps that can help track the fraudsters’ so as to save Nigerians the embarrassments.
