Figures from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on accidents on Nigerian roads in the last 10 years have shown that over speeding is linked to not less than 85 per cent of road crashes.
But the narrative is set to change as the Federal Government is investing in a new over-speeding alert device to not only save about N1.2 trillion, but lives of Nigerians annually.
The new device, called Ikani-Engine Contactless Over Speed Alert, ECOSAD, was designed by a Nigerian, Sunday Agada, of MAC Nigeria Limited.
Explaining more during the presentation of the device to the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, in Abuja, the inventor, Agada said the conception started about 10 years ago and had reached 90 percent completion.
While noting that the device will inject over N400 billion into the economy when commercialized, it will also save about N200 billion every two months from the 12,000 new vehicles that come into the country who will no more use imported speed alert but the locally made ECOSAD.
Currently, motorists buy the device at N35,000 while Agada plans to sell his products which has been certified by the FSRC at N15,000.
According to him, ECOSAD will drastically reduce incidences of road accidents and other avoidable deaths from crashes as it is coming with observed failures associated with imported ones.
In his remarks, the Minister, who was amazed on the new invention by a Nigerian, called on indigenous investors to buy into the commercialization and create job opportunities.
He said “I am happy with this device, which is going to reduce road crashes and save lives and property on our roads.”
“We must take our environment into consideration for any invention. I have said it repeatedly that we need to produce all technology we need because some of the imported ones cannot function well here considering the fact that the data collected before they were designed were not collected here. But if we do our research here, the services we get will be better.
“I call on our entrepreneurs to invest in proven innovations in order not to allow foreigners to commercialise them,” Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu noted.
