Nigeria leads other sub Saharan nations with 12,693 students in US—Report
Impacts of frustrating Nigerian education policy laced with incessant strikes have swollen the number of Nigerians studying in the United States to 12,693, making the country number one in the number of sub-Saharan African students in the United States of America in 2018.
Already, the total number of African studying in the US according to the latest Open Doors report on international education rose to 39,479 within the period under review with Ghana coming a distant second at 3,213 and Kenya third with 3,322.
The students are scattered in about 630 tertiary institutions spread across the United States.
The figure represents a three per cent increase from 2017.
According to the report, in total, the US hosted 1.09 million international students during the 2017/2018 academic year. This marks a 1.5 per cent increase over the previous year, the report states.
The report further revealed that the five most popular US states for Nigeria and Ghanaian students are Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Texas.
Business Hilights recalls that all Nigerian public universities are currently on strike and the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari who recently unveiled ‘The Next Level’ as his 2019 re-election campaign theme is yet to reach truce with the striking lecturers.
