NCC has failed, compromised its statutory duties to protect telecoms consumers—Senate
The Nigerian Senate may be set to weld the big stick on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on grounds of rising telecoms consumers complains over galloping cases of dropped and unconnected calls which they were equally charged.
At plenary on Wednesday, the lawmakers rose in unison to call on the NCC to invoke appropriate provisions of the law and other extant regulations to protect consumers’ as part of measures aimed at protecting consumers and ensuring that citizens get value for their money.
The lawmakers want NCC to immediately compel operators to refund subscribers’ money for drop calls and unconnected calls.
A lawmaker said though service providers have continued to expand their network coverage beyond what their existing infrastructure will carry, no adequate provision has been made to improve service delivery.
In his submission, Senator Shehu Sani of Kaduna State, “it’s very unfortunate that the NCC had consistently made statement on this matter, but has refused to take any serious action against these service providers”.
He said NCC has compromised and failed in their statutory duties to protect the subscribers from the hands of service providers.
Business Hilights recalls that a rough estimate by the NCC indicates that subscribers may be sending well over N54.2bn on dropped calls and unconnected calls in the last two years owing to poor quality of service from service providers.
