NCC currently regulating a total of 5,912 licensees, the highest amongst MDAs

More facts and figures on why the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) remains the lead driver of job creation and digital economy multiplier effects in national development have emerged.

Checks carried out by Business Hilights Intelligence Unit (BHIU) weekend, revealed that the Commission segmented regulatory activities and also created several windows of service deliveries where credible investors with relevant technical knowhow and funding can put their money and contribute to the nation’s economy.

Findings at the Commission’s website showed that there are lists of licensees in different business and service delivery segments all working to grow the digital service space in Nigeria.

It was discovered that all the companies listed on the website are those that have paid their licence fees in full, and have collected their licence documents for the respective telecommunications undertaking before the era of reclassification of Licences into Class and Individual Licences.

Under Sales and Installations, NCC has the largest number of investors’ who registered their businesses totalling about 5,235 operators in the sector.

There is the Internet Services Providers segment with about 127 licensees. There is also the Non six licensees under commercial user group as there are 20 licensees also, under International data services, three under International Gateway , and 13 under Metropolitan (Fibre) cable networks.

NCC issued licenses for two national carriers (Glo and Ntel) with 12 licensees under National Long Distance Communications (NLDO).

Whereas the Commission has one Public Mobile Communications (trunk Radio Services), Eko Telelink ltd, it has three International submarine cable infrastructure & landing services providers.

In Value Added Service (VAS) Aggregators market segment, NCC has 10 licensees and also three Value Added Services are divided into sub-segments made up of 358 licensees’ content service using service-code, one prepaid calling service provider and six Special number services providers.

In infrastructure service and co-location services, the Commission has licensed about 50, with additional 25 licensees doing the jobs of Automated vehicular tracking services as only one investor is controlling the Open access fibre infrastructure network system.

Whereas there is only one wholesale wireless access services licensee, private network links market segment is divided into three levels of operators including two National Operator, 31 Regional Operators and five Local Exchange Operators.

Industry analysts say with over  five thousand licensees and still counting, the industry management capabilities of NCC in driving digital economy and the resultant inclusions, the Commission, under the leadership of  Prof Umar Danbatta has remained focused and active in regulatory performance and intelligence.
