Lagos losing ‘grip’ as Buhari fails to renew Fowlers’ tenure at FIRS?

Undercurrent politicking spree that had spanned since last week came to an unexpected end Monday as contrary to speculations that Lagos favoured candidate for reappointment as chief executive of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr Tunde Fowler, failed to make it.
It apprently seems that Lagos may have lost the grip based on the fact that a leaked notification letter addressed to the Secretary to the Federal Government,Boss Mustapha dated Monday, December 09, 2019, for possible reappointment written by Fowler said in parts: “In view of the above, I wish to present my self for reappointment for a second term. This is consistent with the provisions of the FIRS Establishment Act 2007 and will grnat me the oppourtunity to consolidate and build on the achievmenemt we have recorded in the past four years”.
Upon the letter, President Muhammadu Buhari the same Monday named Mr. Muhammad M. Nami as the new chairman of the federal agency, thus ending week-long scheming by Lagos chain of APC politicians.
Though the national leader of ruling All progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is yet to make a comment, political watchers say the none renewal of Fowler’s appointment may be linked to some internal wrangling that reared its head in the agency some months ago, but was rounded up within the ranks.
Others linked the no second term chance for Fowler to apparent loss of grip by some powerful Lagos clique in the party politics ahead of 2023 permutations.
Nami has already replaced Tunde Fowler, whose tenure expired on Monday, thus squeezing the massive juicy appointment slots engulfed by Lagos State alone in 2015.
Available details on Mallam Nami showed that he is a tax consultant and graduate of Sociology from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.
The Presidency said in the statement announcing the change at tax house by its spokesperson, Garba Shehu, that “Mr. Muhammad, a well-trained tax, accounting and management professional with highly rated qualifications and professional practice and licenses from relevant professional bodies, has almost three decades of practical work experience in Auditing, Tax Management and Advisory and Management services to clients in the banking, manufacturing, services and public sectors as well as non-profit organizations.”
Aside the new appointment which takes effect from Monday, December 09, 2019, Buhari also approved the composition of the board of FIRS.
