Just in: Reps shun NCS’s ₦27,000, pass Tripartite Committee’s ₦30,000 NMW
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Federal House of Representatives today, Tuesday, January 29, 2019, passed the relied on the recommendation of the Tripartite Committee to pass New Minimum Wage (NMW) at ₦30,000.
It would be recalled that shortly after the Committee had submitted its recommendation to the President Muhammadu Buhari for onward transmission to the National Assembly for legislative action, the Federal Government convened a National Council of States (NCS) meeting to review the NMW which according to labour movement has no locus standi by any law on determining NMW.
Beyond nationwide rejection of the NCS proposal of ₦27,000, the Presidency still sent NCS recommendation to National Assembly, but in the wisdom of lawmakers, they relied on the Tripartite Committee report to adopt ₦30,000.
Analysts say what is remaining now is a corresponding adoption by the Senate and harmonization before the Bill will be sent back to the presidency for assent.
Besides, in defending the action of the NCS, the Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige averred that whereas the benchmark for federal workers still remain ₦30,000, the adoption of ₦27,000 by NCS was to ₦30,000 or not lower than ₦27,000.
But with the adoption by the House of Representatives, there strong indication that the upper legislative house will do same so that all workers including federal, state and private sector be on the same minimum wage of ₦30,000 as they all buy from the same markets nationwide after all.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
