Imo State Governor, Chief Emeka Ihedioha has recalled the monthly clean-up exercise in the state alongside the monthly Governor’s Prize for the Cleanest Local Government Area, as well as the Cleanest Autonomous Community, Primary School and Secondary School, respectively in each LGA.
Recall that the administration of former Governor Rochas Okorocha had at inauguration cancelled the scheme which was flourishing under his predecessor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, who factored it into his Clean & Green Initiative (CGI) then.

There had been reports of refuse dumps along major roads and streets and blocked gutters in parts of the state, but recent checks showed that the reconstituted Imo Entraco had been cleaning up the state capital, Owerri on the orders of the Governor.

Accordingly, there are indications that the reintroduction of monthly sanitation scheme will further raise urban cleanliness going forward.
Besides, as part of driving the stability of the re-instituted cleanup exercise, Ihedioha approved the appointment of a Planning, Sensitization and Implementation Committee for the July, 2019 clean-up exercise with the progenitor of CGIas Chairman.
Other members of the Committee, which the Governor did not indicate if it will continue beyond July, include Commander, 34 Artillery Brigade as Deputy Chairman, and Hon. Alex Emeziem as Secretary
Also as members include Imo State Commissioner of Police, Chairman, State Council of Traditional Rulers, Coordinating Chairmen of all LGAs, SUG Presidents of all tertiary institutions, the leaderships of CAN, NURTW, NUT, NLC, PFN, and COREN.
Others include Chinedu Chukwuonye, Okechukwu Opara, Prince Eze Ugochukwu, Rex Okoro and Mrs. Beatrice Nkwo.
Key mandates of the Committee include sourcing for sponsorships/Partners, including, but not limited to; corporate organizations; Organize ‘Ihedioha Green Volunteers’; Create and manage brand materials, publicity and media; Organize and manage the evacuation of refuse and dump sites; Enforce total compliance; Recommend and organize Governor’s Prize; and to audit and handover for August committee, amongst other roles that may be included in future.
A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Chibuike Onyeukwu, averred that “His Excellency further directs that action should be concluded immediately on the above task”.
