Following the recent erosion of party faithful from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the leading opposition party has flagged off plans for a mega reception, vide its National Executive Committee to receive defectors from the APC.
Though the initial plan was to receive federal lawmakers made up of 14 Senators and 37 House of Representatives members, there are strong indications that the plan may be altered to raise the magnitude of the reception considering the inclusion of Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom.
Besides, Business Hilights gathered weekend from a reliable PDP source that the planned reception may still be delayed further “considering stronger indications that more defectors both serving governors and lawmakers are on their way to PDP before the end of August”.
The source averred that “Whereas we working for the arrival of Kwara State Governor and other northern governors who have been technically out schemed like Ortom, both at state and federal levels, no date has been fixed for the meeting”.
The source was quick to reveal that “caucuses had been notified that the meeting could be called at a short notice”.
In an interview with the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan assured that no defectors will be treated with disdain.
He stressed that since the majority of the defectors were coming from the National Assembly, the party would want to welcome them officially to its fold, hinting that “We are planning a special NEC to welcome the defectors into our midst. We want to welcome them officially to their ‘home’.”
“Don’t forget that these men are coming from the National Assembly as senators and members of the House of Representatives. So, we will organise a special NEC to welcome the first set and other NEC meetings will follow as we receive them.
“As we speak, we are expecting some other governors in a matter of days, while some ministers are also talking to us. Days of happiness are here with us. As we receive people with joy and excitement, our challenge is mourning and crying in silence.
“That cry will be with them for long because many of their members are still going to depart from their home,” Ologbondiyan assured.
