First victim of internet fraud emerges on Customs e-auction portal, payment system
An indication has emerged that contrary to the claims by the Comptroller general of Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Hameed Ali that the ongoing e-auction of seizures cannot be tampered by fraudsters; the first victim has emerged from the Idi -Iroko border office Command.
Trouble started when the victim, Julius Ajasa, who came to claim his vehicle was told by Customs officers that he had fake papers. It was later discovered that he had been duped by a hacker who tricked him into paying the prescribed fees into an account.
However, during further checks, when the Ajasa was asked to put a call across to the number provided by the hacker, all the calls were rejected.
According to the Service, the documents the victim came with had Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number RC 06547 which indicated that he was successful on the bid to acquire a Toyota Camry 2010 model. He was consequently sent back empty handed after paying more than N200,000 to the unknown fraudsters.
Additional details from the Command also showed that more genuine winners of the e-auction of vehicles seized by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) are still trooping to the Ogun State command of the Service to pay for and claim their vehicles.
About 45 bidders were handed keys to their vehicles, having fulfilled all necessary conditions attached to the auctioning.
