The federal government may have idealized a strategy to sale excess volumes of generated electricity by Gencos, than allowing the powers to stock away at plants. Nigeria currently generates well over 7,000MW, but can only distribute less than 4,500MW, leaving the remaining to be stocked at generation plants.
Business Hilights gathered weekend that the Permanent Secretary (Power), Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Louis Edozien, reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government of Nigeria to export electricity to member states of Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS) through appropriate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
According to him, government position was based on the improvement in the total generation and transmission capacity of the Nigerian System which currently is more than the absorption capacity of the distribution companies, hence, the need to share the balance with neighbouring countries.
It would be recalled that Distribution Companies (Discos) had in the last couple of months resisted evacuation of all powers so generated due to transmission infrastructure, debts and other factors best known to them.
