FG targets 2nd week of Dec for delivery as Lagos-Ibadan road partial closure begins
As the rescheduled partial closure of main Lagos entry/exit highway, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway begins today, September 2, 2019, the Director of Highways, South West, Mr Funso Adebiyi, said the target was to complete the critical portion of the road before Christmas when more people would be travelling.
In an interview weekend, he said “The reconstruction of portions of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway stretching from the end of Berger Bus Stop to Kara Cattle Market, would be completed by the second week of December.”
He added that “By December 15, we would have worked on the road substantially so that it can be opened again for the Yuletide to avoid traffic jam.”
Earlier during a tour of marked portions of the failed highway and traffic diversion, the Director of Highways, Federal Ministry of Transportation said “Total reconstruction is ongoing and progressing and we will be doing major diversions while the work is on. We need commuters to be tolerant.
“We need this inconvenience to get to where we want to be and we need this diversion for us to work due to the high volume of traffic around this portion of the road.
“Palliative work has been done to ensure smooth movement. Those coming in and out of Lagos would have at least two lanes at every point in time.”
While hinting that provisions had been made to tow faulty vehicles off the road during the period, he warned motorists against breaking traffic rules such as driving against traffic.
Adebiyi assured that “We will do everything to complete the road within the time frame given but we need cooperation from everyone, including residents of the area. They should tolerate us during the period.”
Earlier in a press conference, the Lagos Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Hygenius Umeje, said “It is a short distance but because the area is critical in terms of traffic, there will be adequate provision of personnel as well and three heavy duty tow vehicles would be provided during the period.”
FRSC assured coordinated surveillance from both Lagos and Ogun State Commands even as Police have assured all-round security on the nearly 1.5km stretch of road reconstruction.
