Emefiele’s exit hoax, simply means Buhari won’t renew his tenure—Ohaneze chieftain
Fresh interpretation has emerged on the viral rumour trending on social and conventional media since Monday suggesting that the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has been issued a memo from the presidency to proceed on terminal leave.
Business Hilights recalls that the current CBN boss, who hails from Delta State, has been the Governor of the CBN since June 3, 2014. His appointment is for a period of five years with a window of renewal at the wish of the President and Commander in Chief.
It was not clear if the rumour emanated from the observed low turnout of followers of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) during the Monday visit of the Vice president to Delta State to campaign for Great Ogboru win and possible takeover of the state from the PDP.
Though the speculations has been brushed aside by top officials of the apex bank, the presidency unlike the speed with which it usually reacts to issues, has remained tactically mute, thus, fueling the apprehension that a ‘photocopy’ of the rumour may be close by.
However, in an interview with a chieftain of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Lagos, the official who pleaded anonymity said “Rushing to remove Emefiele even before the official end to his first tenure is an indication that upon all his banking wizardry which he has applied in holding the currency from not totally collapsing, his reward is removal instead of a merited second term”.
“I recall when Mr. President was asked why Igbos are not holding strategic positions in his government, he queried back if the current CBN Governor is not an Igboman. Now that Igboman is going and may be replaced by the same tribe that had overshadowed every position under this government.
“Recall that he had earlier renewed the signal of how appointments will flow under this his second terms from the way and manner he swiftly jumped hierarchy and appointed a northerner as the new head of Federal Fire Service (FFS) sometime last week.
“So, what am saying is that Igbos should bear in mind that Buhari will not reappoint Emefiele as CBN governor at the expiration of his tenure. It happened to the immediate former Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Eugene Ahamefule Juwah and even the immediate former Director General of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mr. Emeka Mba. Both of them were replaced by Fulanis.
According to him, “Rather than giving every section a clear sense of belonging that is not what we are seeing. We are getting more divided and that is not good for a nation of multiple ethnicities like Nigeria.
“However, let us give him a benefit of doubt and see what happens at the true end of Emefiele’s first tenure at the CBN,” the Ohaneze chieftain noted.
