Aziz, NIMC boss visits FCT minister, gets NIN as precondition for land allocation
The Director General of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr Aliyu Aziz and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammed Bello have sealed an understanding that will grow serve a dual purpose.
Whereas the FCT Administration will henceforth make it a precondition for all land allottees to present their National Identity Number (NIN) before the final processing of their land documents, the new deal will drive awareness amongst Nigerians on the importance of getting registered at NIMC.
Only last year, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) fired the first shot by announcing that effective this year, any Nigerian applying for new passport must come with his or her NIN registration.
Defending the new condition for processing land documents, the Minister of FCT, Muhammed Bello, expressed the need for every land allocated to be matched to an individual through the NIN “in order to track and prevent multiplicity of land, and ensure fairness and equity in the allocation process.”
The understanding was consummated during a courtesy visit by the DG of NIMC to Bello as part of awareness creation to encourage Nigerians get registered.
He commended Aziz for the “astronomical increase in enrolment figures and measures he has put in place to ensure safety of data of Nigerians and legal residents in the national identity database, while ensuring credibility and integrity of data collected by the NIMC.”
Business Hilights recalls that the original design by NIMC was to process both the NIN and National Identity Card the same time, but paucity of fund has limited the process to only processing NIN in a slip printout.
