Airfares hit roof top, local 1hour flights now cost between N50,000 to N90,000
The biting impacts of aviation fuel scarcity seem to have taken another dimension as associated challenges have risen from mere flights cancellations and delays to unprecedented hike in airfares.
The hike is across all airlines operating in the country and the worst of the matter, according to aviation experts is that the aviation regulatory agency, Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is not empowered by its establishment Act to regulate fares.
Currently, flight tickets for the major airlines in Nigeria have jumped by almost 40 percent due to the increase in the price of aviation fuel.
From Weekend, Business Hilights survey showed that return ticket on the popular Abuja-Lagos route for the major domestic airlines is now between N70,000 to N90,000.
Our correspondent also gathered that the price of aviation fuel across the nation is now N240 per litre. The product used to be between N205 and N210 per litre until this week.
The situation is even worse in some other states like Kano, Sokoto and Yola where it is sold at N250 per litre.
As it is, both airline operators and passengers seemed to be floating on the mercy of marketers to operate their scheduled flights.
Below are some of the prices charged by airlines on return tickets currently on the Lagos-Abuja route include Arik Airline – Between N70,740 and N76,000, Medview Airline – Between N86,000 and N88,000 and Dana Airline – Between 70,000 and N73,800.
