Okada & Keke: Between what Sanwo-Olu said at Platform and current realities
Since Saturday February 1, 2020, movement of Okada and keke had been officially restricted in key parts of Lagos State in contravention to the promises and reform pledges of the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu at The Platform in October 2019.
While addressing Lagosians at the event organised by a Church based in Iganmu, near National Theatre, the Governor said as follows; “But I need to mention and to also solve the Okada issue.
“Okada is everywhere in Lagos. So part of the things we are going to be doing is not to leave anybody behind because people are currently using a system that is working for them; meaning that some Okada riders that branded, using some smart pay platforms when you finish the journey.
“We are trying to harmonise all of them and be able to come up with a regulation system whereby we can account for every Okada rider in Lagos State.
“We will know who they are and be able to manage them.
“In fact some of the solutions coming up will be a system where we can disenable some of those Okadas remotely. That’s where we are planning to be.
“However, it is also something to think through very well and be sure that nobody is disenfranchised.
“Also, as much as possible, give everybody opportunity to play and play well.
Am hoping that once we do all of this, the challenges around our traffic will be reduced significantly. Thank you very much,” the Governor concluded.
However, latest happenstance in the sector is very hard to merge with the pronouncements of the state chief executive at the platform in 2019 following the banning of Okada and Keke use in major parts of the state rather that implementing a reform that would have accommodated the now unemployed Nigerians after all.
