Sharia law is about to take serious tolls on business activities in the ancient state of Kano following the recent ban placed by the Kano State Government on persons of opposite genders from boarding same commercial tricycles across the state.

Already, several returnees from Kano for yuletide across the southern part of Nigeria, who spoke on the development expressed shocks, saying the policy will kill entrepreneurship and commercial activities which the state is known for.

Some of the Kano based traders’ added that whereas earlier ban forbidding women from boarding commercial motorcycles had frustrated ease of movement in the state, the latest ban on opposite sexes boarding same Tricycle would clearly kill ease of doing business in the state.

Business Hilights Northern Bureau chief reports that the new directive will take effect from January, 2020, adding that a Kano State official had opened up on the new traffic policy on Wednesday at the closing ceremony of 77th annual Islamic Vacation Course (IVC) organised by Zone A of Muslim Society of Nigeria (MSSN) held at Bayero University, Kano.

The Commander General of Hisbah (Sharia Police) Board, Harun Ibn-Sina, representing the state governor, said the state government is committed to upholding Islamic values.

Recall that as a means of supporting ease of movement and business activities, former governor of Kano, Ibrahim Shekarau, introduced Tricycle, popularly known as ‘A daidaita sahu’ in Kano, as a means of transportation for women only after a ban was placed on commercial motorcyclists from conveying women.

However, findings show that since Shekarau’s exit as governor, tricycles have been carrying people of both sexes which core Islamic analysts say is an abreaction to Sharia practice.

But as Kano residents and business operators’ wait for January effective takeoff date, some people have taken to social media seeking for clarification on the following circumstances in using Tricycles:

  1. Can siblings (male and female) ride together?
  2. Can father and daughter ride together?
  3. Can husband and wife ride together?
  4. Can a man and his niece ride together?
  5. Can a man ride with her aunt?
  6. Can a man ride with his mother?
  7. If a woman owns the tricycle, can she ask the rider to take her to a place?
