South Korean technology giant and shipbuilder, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), has kept its promise to complete the construction of the $3bn Egina floating production storage and offloading (FPSO), in September and sail it home to Nigeria between October and November this year.

Constructed at SHI’s Geoye yard, the FPSO is to be installed in Egina offshore field, located some 200 km off the Nigerian coast.

Accordingly, the conglomerate this week, certified it ok and waved goodbye to the multibillion dollar floating platform as it departs shipyard for Nigeria on Wednesday, October 31.

Already, industry analysts say the platform will push up Nigeria’s daily oil output to record high especially oil prices are rising steadily.

Observers say the arrival expected towards the end of the year will change certain narratives in Nigeria’s oil operations especially considering the height of digital technology Egina is coming with.

Delivery specification showed that the facility is coming on an intimidating length of 330 meters, a width of 61 meters, the unit has 2.3 million barrels of storage capacity with topsides weighing 60,000 tons.

A portion of the topsides fabrication and integration is to be completed in Nigeria once the unit arrives at its destination in three months.

The FPSO is expected to be deployed in the second half of 2018, after the remaining topside module integration and commissioning is completed.

Business Hilights recalls that SHI won the order to build Egina FPSO in 2013.

The shipbuilder said that the contract was record-breaking in number at size, technology, being a turn-key project in which Samsung covered the entire engineering, procurement, construction, transport, and commissioning.
