48 hours after, Mile 2 still blocked as Apapa gridlocks relocate to Kirikiri, Satellite Town
Whereas the Presidential Order’s 72-hour ultimatum for articulated vehicles to vacate the entire Lagos ports access roads in Apapa and environs, which expired weekend, may have effected minimal sanity, checks around Mile 2 axis revealed continued blockage of Apapa-Oshodi Expressway as at Tuesday.
Further checks showed that Liliypond Terminal which was hurriedly converted to Truck Holding Bay had been filled to capacity while receding articulated vehicles drivers have resorted to entering deeper into core residential areas of Satellite Town, Kirikiri Town and parts of Ajegunle.
Some of the residents of the affected communities, who spoke to our correspondents, said there is need for another presidential order that will force the heavy-duty vehicles off the residential streets.
Another strong advantage of the Presidential Order is the observed improvement in the Nigerian Ports Authority’s trucks’ call-up system, especially with departure of the men of the Nigerian Navy, which instantly streamlined management of the traffic situation.
However, many of the port business operators said the current freeness of the port access roads may be ephemeral as there is not yet a sizeable Truck Holding Bay that can effectively handle the surging traffic of trucks coming and leaving the ports on a daily basis.
