The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the immediate and permanent cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home across the South-East, following a directive from its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The decision comes amid weeks of tension between IPOB and the Anambra State Government, which had ordered an end to the practice, insisting it was discontinued over five years ago after Kanu’s incarceration. The standoff recently escalated with the sealing of the Onitsha Main Market for failing to open on a Monday despite official warnings.
In a statement issued on Sunday by IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group confirmed that the order to end the sit-at-home was issued directly by Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence in Sokoto Prison after being convicted in 2025 on treason-related charges.
Powerful stated that with the new directive, there is no reason or justification for residents to stay at home on Mondays. He emphasized that markets, schools, offices, transport services, and all economic activities must resume fully from Monday, February 9, 2026.
“The IPOB, under the supreme leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, hereby announces to the entire world that the Monday sit-at-home across the South-East is officially and permanently cancelled with effect from tomorrow, Monday, February 9, 2026,” the statement read.
According to IPOB, the decision was taken to ensure that children return to school and residents carry out their lawful businesses without fear, intimidation, or disruption.”
