New set of ABUS Optometry Doctors at their induction ceremony in Uturu recently
Leading State Varsity South East of Nigeria, the Abia State University Uturu (ABSU), has inducted a total of 125 (One hundred and twenty five) new Doctors of Optometry, at the 30th Induction/Oath taking ceremony of the 2023/2024 Batch of Optometry Doctors of the University.
Declaring the ceremony open, the Vice-Chancellor, Abia State University Uturu, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo charged graduating Doctors of Optometry of the University to uphold professionalism and remain good Ambassadors of their Alma mater, adding that the occasion marks the beginning of a noble and fulfilling career in healthcare.
The Vice Chancellor represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration Professor Roseline Ndimele reminded the graduates that the world is counting on them to bring light to those struggling with vision challenges and thanked all who contributed in moulding them into useful citizens of the society.
In his remarks, the Registrar Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria, Dr Obinna Awiaka noted that Abia State University has been the flagship of Optometry in Africa and urged the graduands to abide by the ethics of the profession.
In their speeches, the Provost College of Medicine Professor Chuks Kamanu represented by Professor A.A. Nwankwo, the Dean Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Chris Timothy and the Head, Department of Optometry Dr Andrew Omaka said ABSU holds a historic record as the first University in Africa to establish a Faculty of Optometry thereby reinforcing its leadership in Optometric education and noted that the day marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor and Administrator Eye Health Management Bureau, Dr (Mrs) Betty Emeka-Obasi, pointed out key giant strides made by the Governor Dr Alex Otti OFR, in prioritizing the eye health of Abians, adding that the Eye Health Management Bureau established by the Governor has helped strengthen the Optometry practice in the State.
In her valedictory speech, the best graduating student, Dr Victoria Nnoli, appreciated Abia State University and their parents for laying good academic foundation for them and promised to keep the flag flying.
The former Dean and the winner of the Best Lecturer of the Faculty of Optometry, Professor O.C Ahuama in his vote of thanks, appreciated all who graced the occasion and charged the new Doctors to remain good ambassadors of the University.
High points of the event was the administration of Oath on the new Doctors of Optometry and presentation of awards.
