The National President of Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations (COMTUA), Prince Adeyinka Aroyewun, has raised serious concerns over the poor level of service delivered so far rendered by the current contractors handling the Truck Transit Park Limited (TTP) and therefore beckoned on the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) never to renew their contract.
In a statement made available to Business Hilights in Lagos, Prince Aroyewun said as follows;
“ I am writing to you on behalf of the Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations to formally express our strong opposition to the proposed renewal of the contract with Truck Transit Park Limited for the management of the electronic call-up system at Nigerian ports.
“Over the past four years, this system has been marred by serious allegations of fraud, extortion, and inefficiency, failing to address the very congestion problems it was designed to mitigate. Numerous stakeholders, including truck owners, logistics companies, and port operators, have reported persistent issues related to the unreliable and corrupt practices associated with the system. It is evident that rather than facilitating smoother operations, the current contract has exacerbated the challenges faced by maritime transport in Nigeria.
“We have documented numerous instances where the electronic call-up system has fallen short, leading to increased waiting times, unnecessary financial burdens on transporters, and significant disruptions in our supply chain. The detrimental impact of this contract has not only frustrated operators but has also resulted in economic losses that ripple throughout the industry and beyond.
“Given these pressing concerns, we urge the Nigerian Ports Authority to reconsider the implications of renewing this contract. We believe it is in the best interest of all stakeholders to explore alternative solutions that prioritize efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
“We propose that the Nigerian Ports Authority undertake a comprehensive review of the current system, engaging with relevant stakeholders to gather insights and recommendations for a more effective approach. The maritime transport sector plays a critical role in Nigeria’s economy, and it is essential that we work together to implement strategies that foster growth and improve operational efficiency.
